The Michael Jackson wrongful death trial began Monday, pitting Katherine Jackson against AEG Live.
Katherine and Michael's three children filed the civil suit in 2010, claiming that the concert company is responsible for the pop star's death, which came two weeks before his This Is It comeback concerts. Their asking for damages estimated in the billions.
In his opening statement, lawyer Brian Panish said AEG was so desperate to stage Jackson’s comeback show that it negligently hired Conrad Murray, the convicted doctor who caused the King of Pop's overdose death in 2009. Panish told the jury, "There will be no question in your mind [AEG] were ruthless. They wanted to...be number-one. They wanted to be number-one at all costs."
AEG claims Jackson personally hired Murray and that it had no obligation to do a background check or supervise the doctor. In his opening statement, AEG's lawyer warned jurors that "we're going to show some ugly stuff."
The trial is expected to last several months.

Collins' Washington Wizards teammates Martell Webster and Jan Vesely tweeted support, as did an All-Star lineup of current players – including Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Pau Gasol, Tony Parker and Dwayne Wade. Collins announcement drew official statements from the NBA, MLB and the Boston Red Sox (who asked him to throw out the first pitch at a game). Former president Bill Clinton tweeted support, and Collins also got a call from President Obama Monday afternoon.
The only people that seem to have missed the importance of Collins' revelation (besides anonymous Internet haters)? Members of the sports media. Various national sports talk radio hosts called it a stunt to sell magazines and that it wasn't worth time on their shows. And ESPN columnist Chris Broussard appeared on the show Outside the Lines and said that Collins was "walking in open rebellion to God."

If you're waiting for Adele to release a new album, you can mark your calendar -- as long as you have a 2014 one handy.
According to a report in London's Mirror, Adele has rolled up her sleeves and gotten to work on the follow-up to 21, but expects it to be a long process. A source says, "Adele is currently in a recording studio in London and it's in lockdown mode for the next few weeks. Four tracks are finished in terms of writing, and she's now laying down preliminary vocals with backing music and singers. The rest of the record will be done in L.A. The feel is very much Adele going back to her roots, with some modern jazz and a couple of classic old songs."

Another day, another run-in for Justin Bieber -- authorities in Sweden boarded his tour bus last night (Wednesday) and found pot.
Cops say they detected a "strong smell" of marijuana as the Bieb's tour bus pulled into the arena in Stockholm where he was scheduled to play. No arrests were made, and news reports aren't saying whether Justin was on the bus during the raid.
Police say they also found a stun gun, which requires a permit in Sweden.
