YEs, I am a Duck Dynasty fan! And I was able to catch the recent episode to start the season off with the vow renewal of Phil and Miss Kay.
Pretty cool that they have been together for 50 years...and funny too that Phil didn't see any reason to do it, have a "real" wedding as he said the previous one ( just a judge) seemed to work just fine. But that its a lady thing and if it makes Miss Kay happy, then he will do it. ( by the way guys....THAT kind of attitude and thought is something we all love!!!)
They were married - or remarried - by their oldest son who is the one without the beard! He is a pastor and is just joining in. But they said their own vows...right on the spot. SO it was real...and honest. REALLY honest if you know some of their back story, which they have shared on some other formats, but not a lot on the show.
When the boys were little and young, Phil was not a good man. Not the man he is today, by a long shot. He was self admittedly living the sex drugs and rock n roll lifestyle and owned a bar. He was rough. He even kicked her own wife and kids out of his house and life for a brief time. No divorce...as Miss Kay says she still loved him and waited for him to come back around. ( they are honestly HUGE in their faith, which is impressive too) Some incident at the bar had Phil in a fist fight with a man, and put the man in the hospital and Phil on the run from the police. He lived in the woods and off the land for about 4 months.
Thats when he decided to get "right" again. Cleaned up, came home and cared for his family. Built the family that they are today.
So when Miss Kay said in her vows to him that he wasn't very nice at times...but she still loved him....thats what she meant. She also said that now he is very nice...and kind...and she will always love him.
He in turn said that she is his best friend and will love her until they put him in the ground.( thats pretty mushy for a tough duck guy!)
So for people who thought it was a nice renewal of the vows...in some ways it was bigger then that. Acknowledging their past...and accepting it and the future they have built together. THe happyness they have built together.
Its just nice to see a show and people on TV that let us know that they are human too, sure they are funny and goofey and edited too, but their hearts are real...and honest....and sometimes run pretty close to things we have in our lives too.
Altho I have already told the Hubby that HIS beard is not getting as long as theirs. Not unless he has 1 million dollars to pull it off!
